More Wordless Wednesday

This was not taken with my usual Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot camera phone; I don’t think it is capable to capture a shot like this. This shot of the moon in the day was taken with my cousin Sony T500 Cyber-shot digital camera. I do not know what picture mode she used for this shot. However, it turned out pretty well. You can almost see some of the bigger craters of the moon.

You may be asking me what’s the big deal with the moon? Most probably you have seen it through documentaries in TV or from pictures in magazine. I thought nothing of the moon previously too; the moon was just a distant object in the sky orbiting around Earth.

But back in 1993-1994 when I was in the Astronomy Club in my Junior College, I was fortunate to be able to see the moon through the telescope in my school. I couldn’t remember if it was a Celestron but it was a pretty decent telescope. It was truly awesome seeing the moon through the scope. You could clearly see the craters and the terrains on the surface of the moon.

On full moon day, it will be so bright that we had to use a filter to view it through the telescope. And it was also through the scope that we got to see Jupiter and four of its biggest moons. It was amazing to see the moons of Jupiter always in different positions around it.

The most spectacular view I had was definitely that of Saturn and the rings around it. We even tried attaching a camera to the telescope to take some shots of the moon and Jupiter but it wasn’t successful. Hope I can dig out some shots and share it with all of you next time.

      @ AuntieE, it is always a pleasant surprise to see moon in the daytime although it is quite common actually. I had once seen the moon while I was jogging and I tried taking a few shots with my Sony Ericsson Cyber-shot camera phone but it didn’t turn out well.

    I have always loved the moon. One of my old nick names, and I still use it some times was MoonDanzer.

    We bought our 400mm, a very expensive lens just to get really good moons shots. But, then we found that we are stuck because our camera is limited.

    We are desperately trying to scrape enough money together for the new Sony A-900 which is a full frame camera and will take shots close up of the moon with the proper lens.

    I have also been fascinated with how the moon in it’s different phases affects people and their actions.

    I know many think this is only a myth, but, ask any nurse or Dr. in an E.R., or, simply anyone that deals with the public and they will tell you a full moon does affect people!!

    @ Jackie, what a pity; you have the tool already but not the right equipment. I hope you’ll have your Sony A-900 soon so that you can put that lens into good use. And I definitely look forward to seeing those great shot of the moon. It is indeed amazing to see the moon going from one phase into another. You don’t have to convince me that the moon affects people, I believe in it. 🙂

    @ Grampy, yes, it can be quite a challenge especially if it is cloudy. And if the sun is too bright, it would just ‘cover’ up the moon.

      @ Brooke, yes I have to agree that she did a wonderful job with that shot. This morning when I was jogging I saw the moon too but I did not have my camera with you. It does require a little luck. 🙂

    @ Dori, it’s amazing. I did find it relaxing gazing at the moon on night when the moon was full or almost full. Somehow it felt good to look up at the sky to see the moon and at time there were breezes blowing through my face.

    I’m always fascinated with moon shots, though I haven’t shot the moon in a day. Sometimes it’s hard to notice it when the sky is bright.

    You’re lucky to have seen those planets and moons even through a telescope. I haven’t even taken the chance to go to an observatorium near my place. Maybe someday I will.

      @ Marlene, yes, you are right. It is hard at time to notice the moon in the day especially when the sky is bright. It was a great experience to be able to see those planets and moons through the telescope. 🙂

    That is a very cool image of the moon during the day. My oldest when he was younger used to get so excited when ever he saw moons that he would always scream every time he saw it–with excitement!

    I’ve always loved the moon during the day, especially in the early morning, when it’s still shining pretty bright. It seems like it hardly ever happens though. It would be a lot of fun to be in an astronomy club. NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day website is really cool.

      @ Ben, somehow I have always felt peaceful whenever I see the moon; as if it has a magical holds on me. Although this could be misleading as we all know that we are the master of our fate: the captain of our soul.
